In early 2020, Jef opened his own wine bar and small plates restaurant, Glou, in Prospect Lefferts Gardens, to strong praise and glowing reviews. When COVD hit, he pivoted to selling groceries, natural wine, and a menu of sandwiches, salads. He began experimenting with a new-fangled pan pizza he developed so that he could feed families in his neighborhood something special that might make them feel joy in a time of tear and anxiety Now comes Corner, an expansion of his pan pizza concept and his vision for every neighborhood, a place where friends and families can shop, eat, and gather—for groceries, pizza, wine, and community.

jeff diesel . wine guy . pizza man . the baker

Jef Diesel (@quel_cepage) has been working in the NYC restaurant business for 15 years. He fell in love with natural wine and opened a rustic wine bar in Brooklyn in 2017.

When shit hit the fan in early spring 2020, Glou was forced to adapt, teaming up with local baker and neighborhood friend Tara Glick to sell cookies, cakes, sandwiches, and wine in paper cups.

Bright and airy, full of plants, with cheap coffee and free xanax (kidding), Glou+Glick became a corner grocery store, a safe space, and something for Jef and Tara to do other than doomscroll all day.

Summer brought sidewalk tables, and social unrest. Fundraisers and sourdough fed the community and kept the spirit alive. Sourdough led to focaccia, topped with fresh ingredients.

Another collaboration, with Tara’s partner Chef Chris Lim, brought discussions of pizza. Steel pans were sourced, and flour ratios experimented with, working towards the middle goal of finding a pizza that tastes like New York but baked in the existing oven. The winds of creative destruction worked their magic.

Tara and Chris have crossed the Hudson and opened their own wood-oven fired restaurant, Porter, in Weehawken NJ (@porterportimperial) , and another friend, Danielle Corkery (@dacorks) , who Tara admits is “arguably a better baker” has taken up the silpats and mixing bowls, adding pies, tarts, and special occasion treats to the seasonal menu.

Danielle is a professionally trained pastry chef with over ten years of experience at some of New York City’s most popular restaurants, in both the front and back of the house. Since the coronavirus outbreak, she has spent her time baking up a storm with Jef, teaching the basics on her IGTV channel, and cultivating her house plants.

Together Jef and Danielle bring their vision of what a Brooklyn neighborhood needs in these changing times. A delicious treat with your coffee, a fresh baked square of pizza for lunch, a few grocery items, fancy nuts, and maybe a few cool pet nats. All, right on the corner.

Oh and don’t forget the butter.
